Day-to-Day as a Family Care Provider

Wall Residences places adults with disabilities into provider homes based on their needs and the skill set of the provider. By carefully choosing each provider and resident match it can lead to pairings that last longer and provide more benefits for everyone involved.

As a provider, you’ll work with 1-2 individuals with disabilities or mental health conditions. They will stay in your home with you as their primary support. You will be supported by a self-selected network of backup workers. These backup workers can be family members, trusted friends, professionals, and even other people training to become a provider.

Your daily routine can include:

● Providing non-medical care

● Helping with transportation and coordination of medical care

● Offering supervision and companionship

● Ensuring safety measures are taken

● Providing meals or meal assistance

● Exploring and enjoying your community

● Participating in volunteer work and other activities

● Documenting progress and changes

How do I apply to be a provider?

Please send your resume and letter of interest to Admissions Director Alex Jackson. All applicant information is preferred over email. If needed, you can also fax your documents to the office at 540-745-5367.

Where can I learn more about residential caregiving?

You can learn more about the job opening at our provider orientation sessions. These are typically held twice a month.

How long will the process take to become a provider?

You can receive part-time training to prepare for your residential care provider job. This builds your skill set for working with adults with disabilities. 

Adults with disabilities who are registered for services through Wall Residences are paired with residential care providers that are capable of fulfilling their needs. 

This process takes an undetermined period of time as it is based on needs of current and potential residents. Your timeline will be dependent on when someone new requests care and lodging or moves from another provider’s home. 

Each time a resident moves in with a residential care provider, our goal is to have the match last for a long time. This gives you and your resident stability and time to bond. 

Once an individual is eligible for your home, you’ll receive a notification prior to them moving in. For most providers the process takes around 3-6 months. The length of time it takes to move through the development process is also determined by the speed a potential provider chooses to move through the training and development steps. 

How can I prepare for an adult with disabilities to live in my home?

Wall Residences provides helpful training that ensures you have the skills and confidence needed to work as a residential care provider.

New residential care providers who do not have sufficient experience working with adults with disabilities will be required to work as a backup for another provider to prepare for supporting an individual in your home.

Can I transfer my paperwork from another agency or training center?

You can transfer training paperwork as long as you include the certificate from the class including the instructor’s signature, date the class was taken, and the training expiration date.

If documents showing previous TB screenings are provided and there has been no disruption in care then this is also transferable.

How do I take required training classes?

In order to make becoming a residential care provider as accessible as possible, Wall Residences provides most of your required training courses.

Providers also need First Aid and CPR certifications which can be obtained through the American Heart Association or Red Cross.
